Plastic Fantastic Show IV

LightBox Photographic Gallery will celebrate its fourth anniversary with the opening and artist’s reception of the Plastic Fantastic Show IV on Saturday June 8, 2013 from 6-9pm.
The exhibits’ first place award winner, Bob Gervais of Portland, Oregon, will give an artist presentation and slide show Saturday at 4pm, before the exhibits’ opening. Bob is recognized for his work using a holga plastic camera to shoot street photography in many locales from NYC to Merida, Mexico. Please contact the gallery for reserved seating for this artist talk.
Featuring photographic images made with plastic “toy” cameras, with this exhibit we celebrate the gallery’s anniversary every year! The Plastic Fantastic Show IV stays true to pure film photography and the use of plastic, pinhole, box or homemade cameras. No digital photography is considered.
LightBox is very honored to have Susan Burnstine as juror once again for the Plastic Fantastic Show. Susan is an award winning professional fine art photographer based in Los Angeles who builds homemade cameras and lenses primarily made out of plastic, vintage camera parts and random household objects. Susan is represented in galleries across the world, her images are mesmerizing and dreamlike, using film with the purity of the process as a vital element, without relying on digital processing.

Portland Photo Month Exhibit

This exhibit will run from April 13 to May 4, 2013,
with the opening artists reception on Saturday, April 13th from 6-9pm
In recognition of Portland Photo Month, April 2013, LightBox Photographic Gallery invites all Portland Photographic Artists to submit work for the PDX Photo Month Exhibit . This group exhibit celebrates LightBox’s appreciation of the Portland Photographic Community. We wish to showcase the best work from the Portland Photographic Community under one roof for this show. We are looking for work that shows the unique vision and creativity of the photographer. Photographic works of any medium and theme are considered. One image from 40 photographers to be featured in the exhibit.
We are pleased to have Jim Leisy as juror for this exhibit. Jim Leisy is a photographer, photography activist, publisher and founding board member of the Portland Art Museum’s Photography Council.

This juried exhibit explores the artistic and creative view of the body and it’s form, celebrating the nude in photography by embracing a variety of styles, welcoming the timeless elegance of a classical study as well as alternative and provocative styles. LightBox was pleased to have Chris Kovacs, founder, editor and publisher or Adore Noir Magazine as juror.
Chris selected a total of thirty images and the gallery awarded an additional ten gallery choice images for a total of forty prints in this years exhibit. The exhibit consists of works from 26 photographic artists from around the country, as well as Japan, Poland and France.
Michael Puff of Montara Ca. received the Juror’s award for his image, untitled #1.
Scott Bulger of Northwood N.H.,
Ryuta Sakurai of Osaka, Japan,
Michael Datoli of Long Beach, Wa.
received the juror’s honorable mentions.

LightBox believes in the fine art photographer, the individual vision that each exhibits with their artistic expression and the importance of the beauty and quality of the final print. Each image and print submitted from every photographer was included in this exhibit. e•mer•gence celebrates each photographers desire to be seen, the thrill of discovering a creative and unique vision, and the ideal of print sharing and the appreciation of the final print. With print sharing as the goal, each photographer will receive a print from another photographer when the exhibit comes down.

In The Beginning
In The Beginning (photos)
Three years ago today, June 13, 2009, LightBox opened it's doors to the public! Since that day over 450 photographers have shown prints on the walls of the gallery, we have had countless events, artist presentations, workshops, classes, openings, gatherings and members photo group meetings.
The journey has been quite an adventure, and as any gallery owner can tell you, a lot of very hard work! Three years later we are still looking ahead and gathering momentum to make LightBox everything we hoped for in the beginning! Over the years from the day we took on the job of building the space to prepare for the grand opening on June 13th, 2009, we have invested everything we have, both sweat and cash into our dream of bringing a Photographic center and gallery to the NorthCoast of Oregon.
Today we celebrate what is and it is with great pride that we thank you all for your interest over the years and for being followers of LightBox! Enjoy these photos that show our adventure from the day we took possession of the space to the day that we opened the door, these pictures show some very fond memories of the days when LightBox was just a dream and we went forward with the belief that you can "leap and the net will appear"! best, M&C

Juror’s
Statement
I am forever inspired and enthused by the ingenuity of
artists who break the rules and make something undeniably their own by using
the most basic of tools. Due to the technical limitations of toy camera
photography, many photographers become content by merely recreating dreamy
effects and a complementary mood. But artists who take it one step further,
such as Matthew Cetta, S. Gayle Stevens, Erin Malone and Daniel Grant stand out
from the crowd and should be applauded for creating wonderfully unique imagery
with these simplistic, optically challenged cameras.
Being asked to juror the Plastic Fantastic contest for the
second year in a row was a great honor. Thank you to Michael and Chelsea for
entrusting me with this great privilege. I congratulate all of the selected
exhibitors and applaud everyone who submitted.

First
Place Award
Matthew Cetta’s first place image Ammonia from his
series Photogenic Alchemy is a visual and technical delight. What may have been
just an average image of the Brooklyn Bridge becomes something truly fabulous
through his use of a microwave and alternative chemical treatments. He asked
himself the most important question, “What if?” and created something truly
fabulous.
Second Place Award
Second place winner, S. Gayle Stevens is a modern day
alchemist who bends, breaks and redesigns the rules. She is one of the most
imaginative practitioners in alternative photography and last year’s first
place winner. Once again, she has offered us another unforgettable and haunting
image with Emergence of Darkness.
Third
Place Award
Erin Malone ‘s Something Still Remains Undone is a
quiet, majestic and affecting image, elevated to magnificence via the
photogravure process.
Honorable
Mention
It’s not an easy task to create an effectively seductive
image with a toy camera. But Daniel Grant’s knocked it out of the ballpark with
his image, The Couch. As part of his series My Affair With Diana, The Couch
leaves as much to the imagination as it reveals, making this a truly
mysterious, alluring image.

“27 Mornings in Winter”
LightBox Photographic Gallery will host the opening of “27 Mornings in Winter”
with an artist reception on Saturday January 14h, 2012, from 6-9pm. This
body of work is a series of Palladium prints produced from stills of a short film
by the artist, Douglas Ethridge, of Tahuya, Washington.
“27 Mornings In Winter began as a short film, made to ward off those mid-winter blues by embracing each wet and gray day as an opportunity. As I was editing the film, I began to see unique moments within the dissolves of one scene to the next. In seeking to retain the contemplative nature of the film, I chose to render a selection of the resulting stills as hand-made palladium prints.”

The film “27 Mornings in Winter” will be shown in LightBox upper gallery during the opening, and will be featured on Sunday, January 15th at 1pm with a screening during an artist talk about the film, the series of palladium prints, and the process involved in the evolution of the entire body of work.
